Established in 1994, Pleasant Tours brings three decades of on-the-ground experience to every itinerary we design.
Our team is with you throughout the trip — before, during, and after. No question goes unanswered, no problem unsolved.
Madurai is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on earth — a place where history doesn't sit behind glass but spills into the streets. Sitting on the banks of the Vaigai River in southern Tamil Nadu, the city has been shaped by the Pandya and Nayak dynasties, the Chola empire, and the British Raj, each layer leaving its own mark on the skyline, the cuisine, and the way people live. At its centre stands the Meenakshi Amman Temple, a 17-acre complex of soaring, colour-drenched gopurams that took over 1,500 years to complete. Visit just before sunrise when the ritual lamp-lighting begins, and you'll understand why millions make this pilgrimage every year.
But Madurai tour packages reveal much more than the famous temple. The city smells of jasmine and camphor in the early morning, filter coffee by mid-day, and slow-braised mutton as dusk falls. Street vendors sell garlands threaded together with an artistry passed from generation to generation. The nights are long and lively — Madurai sleeps late and rises with purpose. Whether you're travelling for culture, spirituality, history, or just the food, our Madurai holiday packages are built around the experience that actually matters to you.
Our Madurai sightseeing tour covers the city's defining landmarks — and a few spots the guidebooks quietly skip over. Here's what every traveller should experience.
Fourteen gopurams rising up to 52 metres, painted with over 33,000 sculpted figures. The inner sanctum glows gold, and the Hall of a Thousand Pillars rings with centuries of footsteps. No Madurai trip is complete without at least an hour inside these walls — ideally at dawn, when the crowds are thin and the priests are chanting.
Built in 1636 and restored across centuries, this Indo-Saracenic palace tells the story of the Nayak kings who made Madurai their capital. The grand Swargavilasam — the celestial pavilion — has a dome so wide it makes your voice sound like you're standing in a cathedral. The evening sound-and-light show brings the whole story alive.
One of the most moving museums in South India, housed in the Tamukkam Palace. The exhibit preserves the blood-stained dhoti worn by Gandhi at the time of his assassination — a profoundly human artefact in a collection that traces India's independence movement from the ground up. Allow at least 90 minutes here.
Perched 2,133 metres above sea level, Kodaikanal is just 120 kilometres from Madurai and a world away from the city heat. Pine forests, a star-shaped lake, Coaker's Walk with views dropping into the plains — it's a favourite add-on in our Madurai tour packages for families and honeymooners alike.
Twenty kilometres north of the city, this ancient Vishnu temple sits at the base of a forested hill where peacocks roam freely. The climb to the summit temples rewards you with sweeping views over the Vaigai plain. Pilgrims have made this journey for over 2,000 years — and the path has barely changed.
The lanes around the temple are a sensory world unto themselves — bolts of Kancheepuram silk, brass lamps, flower garlands, and snack stalls selling jigarthanda (a layered milk-based drink unique to Madurai). No Madurai holiday package should skip an evening walking tour through here, stomach growling and camera ready.
Three decades of travelling these roads has taught us something important: the best Madurai tour isn't the most comprehensive one — it's the one that matches exactly what you came for. A retired couple seeking spiritual depth needs a different itinerary than a young family chasing adventure and history. Our Madurai tour packages are genuinely customised, not just relabelled templates. We discuss your interests before we write a single line of your itinerary.
We are a Madurai-born agency — our office is at Plot No. 3, Angalaeswari Nagar, Zion Street, Kochadai. We know which temple guides speak honest English, which hotels have hot water that actually runs, and which roadside stalls are safe to eat at without consequence. That's the kind of local knowledge that doesn't appear in any brochure. Our Madurai tourism packages also connect seamlessly to wider South India routes — add on a Kanyakumari tour package for the southernmost sunrise, or thread Rameshwaram into your circuit for a complete Tamil Nadu pilgrimage trail.
Explore All PackagesOctober through February is ideal — temperatures sit between 18°C and 28°C and the air is dry. Avoid April and May when humidity and heat can reach 40°C. The Chithirai Festival in April–May is spectacular if you can bear the weather.
Madurai Airport (IXM) has direct flights from Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Colombo. By train, the Pandian Express from Chennai takes around 8 hours overnight — a comfortable option that saves hotel costs for one night.
Remove footwear before entering any temple. Dress modestly — shoulders and knees covered is the standard. Non-Hindus are welcome in the outer precincts of Meenakshi Temple but may not enter the inner sanctum. Photography rules vary; always ask before pointing a lens.
Loose cotton clothing is your best friend. Carry a light scarf for temple visits and cool evenings in December–January. A good pair of walking shoes matters more than anything else — the old city is best explored on foot.
Start every morning with idli and sambar at a local canteen. Seek out Madurai-style mutton biryani at lunchtime — the seeraga samba rice variety is unique to this region. End the day with jigarthanda or filter coffee strong enough to keep you up through two temples.
Book your Madurai tour package at least 4–6 weeks in advance during peak season (November–January) and festival periods. Last-minute bookings mean fewer accommodation choices and higher transport costs. Contact us early and we'll lock in the best options for you.
Whether it's your first visit to Tamil Nadu or your fifth, every Madurai tour package we build is a little different — because every traveller deserves more than a copy-paste itinerary. Tell us what moves you, and we'll take care of the rest.
